Camel as a cigarette brand was introduced by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, were the company was founded. Because of the brand’s popularity people gave this town another nickname – “Camel City”.
The brand was named “Camel” due to Turkish paper which was used in its production, in imitation of then-fashionable Egyptian cigarettes.

And finally, R.J. Reynolds has organized in advance the advertising campaign, prior to official release. The campaign used teasers that merely stated “the Camels are coming”.
Of course this strategy very soon made Camel one of the top selling brands in the world. Offering affordable cheap prices, Camel left its competitors far behind.
